Nerja is just the sort of place we've been looking for as our next home. With a population of about 20,000, it's a neat and tidy small town which is nevertheless big enough to have a cosmopolitan feel with quality shopping and ethnic restaurants, cultural events, some attractive architecture, and lots of interesting places to walk. We weren't really looking for a seaside location, but one can hardly complain about that. The mild winter weather we've experienced here is more than acceptable, with sunny skies a majority of the time and highs around 12-16C (54-61F). It's possible it gets too hot in July and August, but that's when you could leave to visit the cooler bits of Europe which, after all, are just a short distance away.
The one drawback, of course, is cost – particularly with respect to housing. We could probably afford to live here if we were satisfied with an apartment or small townhouse, but the larger villas with gardens that we are attracted to are probably out of our budget. That doesn't stop us from stopping at the window of each real estate office we pass to look at the flyers. And we enjoy walking through the different neighborhoods, visiting the weekly market, walking on the beach, and experiencing the city however we can. We just have to remember that we have European taste on a Mexican budget.
