The Nerja Caves are about 4 km (2.4 mi) down the coast to the east of town. At the entrance to the cave complex they make a big deal to tell you not to use the flash on your camera. Then you descend the first set of stairs and you have one of those annoying teams of photographers there to take your special souvenir photos for purchase upon your exit from the caves. And of course what are they using to take the photographs? A giant flash. Over and over. Once we made it past the photographic gauntlet we quite enjoyed the caves, which included the usual assortment of stalactites and stalagmites and other formations, but also some surprisingly large caverns, including the Hall of the Cataclysm, which features a stalactite column considered by the Guinness Book of World Records as the largest in the world. One of the chambers forms a natural amphitheater where concerts are held during the summer. That must be amazing.
